Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

MBSR was developed in 1979 by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn, at The Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr Kabat-Zinn, who founded the Center for Mindfulness in 1995, is widely recognised as a pioneer in the integration of Mindfulness practices and meditation into mainstream medicine. Today, the programme is being offered in medical centres, corporations, schools and other settings.  MBSR is a widely researched mindfulness programme in both scientific and clinically studies. This MBSR course has consistently shown benefits in reducing medical and psychological symptoms in many medical conditions such as chronic pain, psoriasis, etc. A short video here introduces some past research on mindfulness:

Mindfulness is being aware of the present moment and acknowledging current feelings and thoughts without being judgemental. Contrary to letting your life pass you by, mindfulness involves being in the moment and having a heightened sense of awareness of the world around you.

You can think of mindfulness practice as a workout for your brain – a way to keep strong, fit, and resilient. Like physical exercise, mindfulness requires some basic training and ongoing practice. Developed primarily via meditation practice, over time, mindfulness results in greater focus and well-being.

Growing empirical research shows that mindfulness meditation techniques can:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Decrease emotional reactivity
  • Improve concentration
  • Strengthen confidence and resilience
  • Promote peace of mind and well-being
  • Help cope with pain and illness
  • Enhance willpower and decision-making
  • Help cultivate compassion for self and others

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an 8-week introduction to mindfulness through guided meditation, group dialogue, and home practice. The programme focuses on the use of mindfulness for managing everyday stressors related to everyday work, health, relationship, and other concerns. Over the course of eight weeks, you’ll learn to be more present and to be more aware of automatic reactions and communication patterns that cause stress.

Methods of Delivery:

  • Orientation Session – (7:00pm – 8:00pm), is required by all participants before the start of the programme,
  • 8 sessions of MBSR – weekly (7:00pm to 9:00pm)
It comprises of group learning sessions and incorporates various forms of meditation, including sitting meditation, body awareness and simple movement exercises.
*To fully benefit from the programme, please make sure you can attend all classes.
  • Day of Mindfulness – a compulsory day to attend (10:00am to 4:00pm)
This will guide you on how to apply mindfulness across many situations and grow your practice of mindfulness beyond the end of the eight-week course.
